US Service Member Critically Injured in Gaza Humanitarian Aid Mission

 During a humanitarian aid mission to Gaza, a U.S. service member sustained a severe injury and is now in critical condition. This incident occurred on May 23 aboard the USNS Benavidez (T-AKR 306), as confirmed by U.S. defense officials.

In a press call on Thursday, defense officials disclosed that three U.S. service members were injured while supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza. Vice Admiral Brad Cooper provided updates, noting that while one service member is in critical condition, the other two suffered minor injuries described as "routine." One of these minor injuries was a sprained ankle. Both individuals with minor injuries have since returned to duty.

A temporary pier was set up on a Gaza beach last Thursday to aid in the delivery of humanitarian supplies. This effort comes amid growing global calls for Israel to allow more aid into Gaza, which is suffering due to the conflict with Palestinian militant group Hamas and an impending famine. The aid operation began on Friday, with U.N. contractors transporting supplies to a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Deir El Balah.

However, the delivery faced significant obstacles. By Saturday, only five trucks reached the warehouse after crowds intercepted 11 others. According to U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric, desperate people stopped the trucks and took supplies in an act of "self-distribution."

Due to these disruptions, the U.N. temporarily paused aid distribution to plan new routes and improve coordination. Abeer Etefa, a WFP spokesperson in Cairo, explained that these changes aim to ensure aid reaches its intended destinations without further interception.

Aid access to southern Gaza has been particularly challenging as Israel's intensified military operations in Rafah have displaced approximately 900,000 people, further complicating the humanitarian situation.

The incident underscores the risks and complexities of delivering humanitarian aid in conflict zones. The critical condition of the U.S. service member highlights the perilous nature of these missions. As efforts continue, the focus remains on safely and effectively delivering much-needed supplies to Gaza's population.
