Ukraine Secures €1B Military Aid from Spain in New Security Pact

In a significant development, Ukraine has secured a comprehensive bilateral security agreement with Spain, marking a pivotal moment in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's first official visit to Madrid. This agreement underscores Spain's continued commitment to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during a joint news conference with Zelenskyy, highlighted Spain's steadfast support for Ukraine over the past two years. "Unfortunately, Russian aggression continues, and we have to increase our support," Sánchez stated.

The new pact includes a robust package of military aid exceeding €1 billion for the current year, with a pledge to extend this to €5 billion by 2027. Zelenskyy expressed profound gratitude for Spain's generosity, emphasizing the importance of the additional air defense systems, artillery shells, and armored vehicles provided.

Sánchez revealed that Spain is preparing to supply more Patriot air defense missiles and Leopard tanks, although specific numbers were not disclosed. Despite refusing to provide complete Patriot batteries, Spain has agreed to send the missiles essential for these systems. Zelenskyy stressed Ukraine's urgent need for at least seven Patriot systems to counter the relentless Russian bombardment, which deploys over 3,000 aerial bombs monthly.

Madrid has also ramped up its efforts to train Ukrainian troops, ensuring they are better equipped to defend their nation. Sánchez announced that Spain's support extends beyond military hardware to include crucial demining operations, recovery efforts, and financial assistance.

This latest agreement marks the 10th such security pact Ukraine has forged with its allies, a strategic move aimed at securing long-term support as it aspires to join NATO. These agreements, however, do not involve direct troop deployments to Ukraine or engaging in missile defense over Ukrainian territory.

Spain's comprehensive support package is a testament to the enduring alliance between the two nations, highlighting a shared commitment to countering aggression and fostering stability in the region. As Ukraine continues to fortify its defenses, the collaboration with Spain serves as a beacon of international solidarity in the face of ongoing conflict.
