Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, the 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has officially requested to change her name to Shiloh Jolie. Sources have confirmed to PEOPLE that she filed the legal documents on her 18th birthday, May 27. TMZ initially reported the news.
Jolie and Pitt, who have six children together, now see another of their offspring choosing a different name. Their 15-year-old daughter, Vivienne, appears as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for the new musical "The Outsiders," which she co-produced with her mother. PEOPLE has verified this, though it's unclear if Vivienne has legally changed her last name.
Shiloh and Vivienne aren't the first Jolie-Pitt children to alter their names. Last November, Zahara, the eldest daughter, presented herself as "Zahara Marley Jolie" at a Spelman College Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority event, a moment captured in a video shared by Essence.
These name changes occur amidst reported family tensions, particularly between Pitt and his children, since Jolie filed for divorce and sought sole physical custody in 2016. Sources close to Pitt have noted his ongoing efforts to maintain a strong relationship with his children. In August 2022, a source told PEOPLE that Pitt, now 60, was working hard to improve his relationship with his kids despite challenging circumstances. The source described the situation as "sad" and noted the long periods when Pitt did not see his children.
The custody battle between Jolie and Pitt has been a lengthy and difficult process, involving not just custody but also disputes over shared assets like the winery Chateau Miraval. Jolie's lawyer recently told PEOPLE that Angelina's primary aim has always been "separation and health, with positive relationships between all family members, including Mr. Pitt."
Shiloh's name change adds another layer to the complex dynamics of the Jolie-Pitt family. How these changes will affect Pitt's relationship with his children remains to be seen. Shiloh's decision to adopt "Shiloh Jolie" suggests a desire for individuality and perhaps a closer connection with her mother's side of the family.
